U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Matt Whitaker, remarked that attacks by Ukraine within Russia are nudging Moscow and Kyiv towards negotiations. President Donald Trump continues to push for peace talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In a segment on “The Big Weekend Show,” Whitaker expressed that cooperation from both sides is essential for ending the war. He noted that Ukraine’s strong attacks are contributing to bringing the conflicting parties closer. However, he warned that both Moscow and Kyiv are still “a long way apart” regarding key issues, stressing that a resolution will emerge through diplomacy, not conflict.
Whitaker mentioned, “This conflict will not be resolved on the battlefield; only through diplomacy and negotiation will it end.” He supports President Trump’s discussions with both sides to identify common ground for peace.
Matthew Whitaker, while at the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, cautioned that without Putin’s willingness to compromise, reaching an agreement is “impossible.” Nevertheless, if a deal is feasible, Trump’s experience as a businessman may aid in securing it.
Remarks from Trump highlighted heavy casualties, with 25,000 individuals losing their lives the previous month and 32,000 the month prior in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, as reported on the White House lawn. These numbers mostly account for soldier fatalities.
The reported figure for Russian soldier losses since the 2022 invasion stands at 450,000 according to the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS).
