The New York Knicks Face Decisions as Championship Camp Begins

The New York Knicks are celebrating their first championship victory in over 50 years. As the team now embarks on camp preparations, the front office is tasked with finalizing the roster. Five veteran players have been signed to camp deals, yet there are only one or two potential openings available. The depth among big men players is especially thin, raising questions about how the team will round out its lineup.

NBA insider Marc Stein highlighted a potential advantage for one player in The Stein Line. James Wiseman has a prior relationship with coach Mike Brown, which could influence his chances in the camp competition.

“If Wiseman makes the Knicks’ Opening Night roster, it will cement a reunion for the former No. 2 overall pick with former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown,” Stein reported.

Brown is widely recognized as Gotham’s first championship-winning coach following the reign of Red Holzman more than five decades ago. As Stein explains, Brown’s history with Wiseman extends to the latter’s initial seasons with the Warriors, where Brown worked under Steve Kerr’s guidance.

The fit between Wiseman and the Knicks appears logical. According to Stein, Brown is a fan of Wiseman’s potential. Moreover, the newly crowned champions seem to possess a requirement for a third big man behind established players Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond. However, Brown’s endorsement alone is insufficient for Wiseman’s success. At 25, Wiseman possesses size but has participated in only five games over two years. He must demonstrate agility and capability during camp.

The competition among wings intensifies the pressure on the decision-making process. Bruce Brown, John Konchar, and Ochai Agbaji each offer valuable skills, making cuts in October challenging. Drew Eubanks presents a safer choice, while Wiseman represents a potential yet uncertain gamble. With Towns and Drummond leading, the team may lean towards safety, though Brown’s familiarity with Wiseman is noteworthy.
