Surprising Encounter with Gulf Sturgeon in the Suwannee River

While capturing a serene swim in the river to share with friends, Tiffany Raulerson made an unexpected discovery. Living in Florida offers frequent opportunities to observe wildlife. During a swim in the Suwannee River, she noticed a fish leap from the water, greatly surprising her.

Raulerson had been filming for friends when she suddenly saw a rare sturgeon across the river. There are 27 sturgeon species worldwide. More than half are critically endangered. Raulerson likely observed a Gulf sturgeon. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that the Suwannee River hosts the largest Gulf sturgeon population in the state.

“The encounter happened at a place significant to my family,” Raulerson shared, indicating that they visit the river frequently.

Gulf sturgeon sightings are common locally, yet capturing the event on video made it especially memorable. She posted the footage on TikTok on September 8 under @tiffanyraulerson6, garnering over 38 million views. After witnessing the fish jump, Raulerson turned toward her camera, astonished, with the caption, “Ain’t no way, man.”

“These creatures frequent the Suwannee River, so spotting them isn’t rare,” Raulerson explained. “This occasion stood out because I caught it on camera.”

Understanding Sturgeons

Sturgeon species have existed since the dinosaur era, and several are found in North America. Gulf sturgeon can grow between 6 to 8 feet long and weigh up to 200 pounds. Encountering one in the water could be startling.

Despite their size, sturgeons do not target humans. They eat small aquatic organisms and usually pose little danger. However, sturgeons might leap from the water. Such jumps can be hazardous if a swimmer or boater is in the way.

If a swimmer encounters a sturgeon or another large animal, it’s advised to maintain distance and not approach it. If the presence of the animal is unsettling, leaving the water calmly is wise.
