Owen Crouch’s Breakout Moment for Jacobs

Junior receiver Owen Crouch reflects on a game-changing play from his season at Jacobs. Two weeks ago, the Golden Eagles overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat Burlington Central and stay unbeaten. Crouch’s remarkable 74-yard touchdown catch from Austin Stennett reduced the deficit to 20-10.

I’ve been thinking about this year, said Crouch, after recording five catches for 111 yards in the 31-27 win. I think that catch was the turning point for me, setting the standard for how I want to continue the season.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 150 pounds, Crouch followed his standout performance against the Rockets with another impressive game. Against McHenry, he gathered five catches for 135 yards and scored touchdowns of 69, 19, and 18 yards, securing a 49-6 win.

This victory sets Jacobs (5-0, 5-0) up for a crucial match against Huntley (5-0, 5-0) in the Fox Valley Conference. Jacobs coach Brian Zimmerman has been particularly impressed by Crouch’s precise route running and exceptional hands.

That kind of sparked the comeback that night, Zimmerman remarked about Crouch’s touchdown during the Burlington Central game. He’s a precise route runner and a very tough kid. His hands are unbelievable.

Crouch attributes his skills to consistent practice with junior quarterback Stennett. I work a lot on my route running and catching ability, Crouch noted. Every day, we work together to refine what we like and don’t like.

Stennett’s development has also played a key role in the team’s dynamic offense, which had been primarily known for its running game.

Stennett shared, I’ve had Owen as one of my receivers since my first day of freshman year. Our connection has really strengthened over the past few years.

As Jacobs prepares to face Huntley on Friday, the stakes are high with both teams unbeaten.

The game promises an electric atmosphere, as Zimmerman pointed out, with around 5,000 people attending. For us, it’s about continuing to do what we’ve done, putting our heads down and getting to work this week, he said.

Despite the pressure, Crouch remains composed. They’re a good team, he acknowledged. But it’s just another week for us. We want to go 1-0. That’s been our mentality the whole season.

Moving from the junior varsity team to becoming Jacobs’ leading receiver, Crouch isn’t taking his success for granted. It’s nice because I was a JV player waiting my turn, but now it’s finally here, he expressed. It’s rewarding to see the work pay off and everything come together. My confidence has definitely been growing.
