Chicago Bears fans were anxious on Sunday as their star quarterback, Caleb Williams, sustained an injury late in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings.
Trailing 6-3 and pushing for a pivotal score deep in Vikings territory, Williams moved to his left. As Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel closed in and aimed for Williams’ right leg, the quarterback evaded the tackle, yet his hamstring gave out, causing him to collapse.
The incident was classified as a non-contact injury. Considering Williams’ apparent pain, there were immediate fears of a serious condition like an Achilles tear. Early reports after the game provided some relief, suggesting a possibility of a short recovery period; however, confirmation depended on the MRI results due on Monday.
Fortunately, the news turned out positive. NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that tests confirmed Williams did not suffer significant damage to his hamstring. The team is not excluding him from playing in Week 3 against the Eagles on “Monday Night Football,” scheduled a week ahead.
“This development is a substantial relief for Chicago,” remarked a team representative.
When Williams was injured, he appeared to be in considerable pain and needed transportation off the field. This was a distressing sight for the team’s supporters, given his status as one of the league’s promising young talents.
In the season opener against the Panthers, where the Bears achieved a commanding 59-37 victory, Williams was exceptional. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 269 yards, scored two touchdowns, and intercepted none. He also gained 65 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Before Sunday’s mishap, he demonstrated these abilities again under challenging weather, marked by rain and wind, impacting the game’s score. Williams concluded with 16 of 26 passes for 138 yards, one interception, and 42 rushing yards in an intense NFC North match.
The possibility that Williams might not miss significant playtime is good news. While this does not assure his presence against Philadelphia next week, his chances of missing more than one game appear minimal. After facing the Eagles, Chicago will host the Jets and later travel for games against the Packers and Falcons.
