Nashville Zoo Cancels Zoolumination Due to Visa Denials for Chinese Artisans

1 month ago 0

The Nashville Zoo has announced the cancellation of its annual Zoolumination festival for the 2026-27 season. This decision follows the denial of visa applications for Chinese artisans who build the event’s extensive lantern displays. As the nation’s largest lantern festival, Zoolumination has become a staple holiday attraction in Nashville. However, without the skilled artisans from InLight Festival Group, the event cannot proceed.

Visa Denials Impact Festival Plans

The zoo announced on Wednesday that its longtime production partner faced visa issues. These problems prevented artisans from traveling to Tennessee to construct the lantern displays. The difficulties align with a broader pattern of denied visas affecting cultural and seasonal events across the U.S. Earlier this year, a lantern festival in Des Moines, Iowa, faced a similar fate due to visa denials. Neither the Nashville Zoo nor InLight has specified the number of artisans impacted or the visa type involved, citing a crackdown on certain visa programs during the Trump administration. Newsweek reached out to the U.S. State Department and InLight for further comment.

Importance of Zoolumination for Nashville

Since its inauguration in Nashville in 2019, Zoolumination has attracted numerous visitors with over 1,000 handmade silk lanterns. The event relies on craftspeople from Zigong, China, known for their lantern-making expertise. The temporary displays, ranging in size and complexity, have been a significant draw during the winter holiday season.

Alternative Holiday Plans

Following the cancellation, the Nashville Zoo will introduce a new event named Glow Wild. The substitute attraction will feature illuminated wildlife displays, festive installations, and an 85-foot synchronized Christmas tree. Glow Wild is scheduled to run from November 13 to January 3, 2027, keeping the holiday spirit alive at the zoo despite the absence of Zoolumination.

InLight Festival Group’s Role

The lantern displays are a product of collaboration with InLight Festival Group. This company specializes in international lantern festivals, organizing events for zoos, parks, and attractions worldwide. The artisans from Zigong travel to the U.S. to assemble these elaborate displays, integral to the festival’s charm and success.
