Smithsonian Opts for Historic Building for National Museum of the American Latino

3 weeks ago 0

The Smithsonian Institution confirmed its decision to establish the National Museum of the American Latino within a historic 145-year-old building. This choice avoids the need for congressional approval required for new construction.

On Monday, the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents voted to house the American Latino museum in the Arts and Industries Building. This redbrick Victorian structure, covering 258,000 square feet, is positioned beside the institution’s headquarters on the National Mall. Although Congress initiated the museum in 2020, it has been without a permanent location until now.

Historically, the building has served various functions within the Smithsonian Institution. The decision to utilize this facility highlights the commitment to preserving historical architecture while advancing cultural representation.
