Keith Lee Partners with Salvation Army for Relief in Gary, Indiana

On Monday, food influencer Keith Lee collaborated with the Salvation Army and the city of Gary for a major relief operation in northwest Indiana. Residents there endured two weeks without power following severe weather. Powerful storms with winds up to 100 mph hit on August 11, causing serious damage, including uprooted sidewalks and fallen trees.

Keith Lee, originally from Detroit and now living in Texas, gained fame through straightforward food reviews. He announced this partnership via social media, explaining that his team had intended a food festival and tour but pivoted plans after learning of the crisis in an area with limited resources.

“We changed everything immediately,” Lee stated. “We couldn’t go ahead with a food festival in the Midwest while Gary was suffering, and no attention was being given to it.”

At the event, residents walked or drove up to receive one of 2,000 relief kits. These kits contained cleaning supplies, N95 masks, and more. Volunteers distributed 1,000 sandwiches along with chips and drinks. Keith Lee and Tyrese Haliburton, an Indiana Pacers player, each donated $15,000 to the relief effort.

The site of Roosevelt High School transformed into a free festival complete with food trucks and live music. Sylvia Martin, Gary’s planning and zoning director, emphasized the community’s role in organizing the event despite a short timeframe. “This is the community’s effort,” she said. Volunteers and residents came together to provide relief.

Local businesses contributed significantly. Vendors distributed food from various tents, offering items like grilled chicken tacos and distinctive pineapple bowls. Many vendors quickly mobilized to participate, highlighting the community’s resilience.

The storm left a lasting impact, with over 7,000 buildings still without power as of Monday. Local power supplier NIPSCO expected full restoration by Tuesday. Meanwhile, residents voiced concerns that communities with smaller Black populations regained power more rapidly. Christine Jones commented on these disparities, referring to them as environmental crises affecting underserved areas.

Residents continued to face challenges, such as acquiring daily necessities due to closed local stores. Jones shared her struggles, “We ran out of water quickly and had to discard our spoiled food from the fridge and freezer.” Despite these hardships, relief efforts have brought vital assistance.

While the city’s YWCA offered a day shelter with showers and food, volunteers like Dora Rogers, who also lacked power, helped manage the event. Rogers, a fan of Lee, expressed gratitude for his involvement and raising awareness of Gary’s situation during crucial times.

“Keith Lee is putting Gary on the map,” Rogers said, hopeful that power restoration continues so she can restock her kitchen and clear storm debris. Among the challenges, the community’s unity has been a source of strength. “The storm was massive, but our community stood together,” she reflected.
