“You can’t reject someone because they have a tattoo, Dad.” His reluctant agreement came after hours of combing through my dating app possibilities, eliminating profiles as he went while I remained focused on work. Nearing 40, my father became the CEO of my personal life; his love language was logistics.
Understanding Modern Dating
“What is cuffing season?” he asked, immersed in the task. “It’s when people seek companionship during the colder months,” I explained with a laugh. His meticulous note-taking included names from preferred profiles, mostly golfers or antiques enthusiasts—his favored pastimes.
Dad generously said, “If you find any profiles you like, we can look at them together.” This reminded me of the matchmaker from ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ Operation Whitney Recovery was underway.
Facing Sudden Changes
Two months earlier, the future I envisioned—a shared home, possibly a child—vanished when my boyfriend opted for a ‘break’ on the last day we could withdraw from the house contract we planned to buy. In early November, my parents recommended staying with them for the remainder of the year. I exited my boyfriend’s residence in South Carolina, heading to my parents’ home in Florida.
Though appreciative, settling into the guest room felt regressive. The end of our relationship was humiliating, causing grief not only for the relationship but also for beloved places and people. I planned to stay through Thanksgiving, then secure an Airbnb nearby until Christmas. Dad had other intentions.
Rediscovering Family Bond
Dad and I had shared a close bond since childhood. At age three, he would accompany me to Krispy Kreme for donuts. During these visits—initially discussing child-sized issues, later his job loss, and eventually my divorce at 34—Dad always led with laughter.
Once, while assisting me with chocolate milk, he spilled it on my OshKosh overalls, humorously claiming, “She spilled it all over herself.” This is an example of his mischievous nature—one Mom never quite believed.
Now, those excursions addressed my heartbreak. “I believed he would do anything for you,” Dad remarked about my ex. “Instead, he did nothing.” But our lamenting couldn’t alter the past.
Creating a New Life Plan
Dad took action. Mornings saw us in his home office—Mission Control—with my parent’s dogs and we would coordinate our recovery strategy. I aimed to find a new place near my parents to support them as they aged. Together, we searched for a suitable home.
An apartment above a Pilates studio almost became my lease, but Dad insisted on visiting during class. The instructor’s loud commands and music assurances made clear my potential regret. Another location’s appeal led Dad to expectantly observe me. My confident claim of “This is the one” reflected a choice rooted in personal, not former relational desires.
Financial Security and Personal Growth
Dad accompanied me to multiple financial advisor meetings, ensuring security amidst personal upheaval. Despite instability, warmth persisted with Mom and Dad, Krispy Kreme outings, and insights from Mission Control.
Dad mused, “These dating apps are terrible, Whitney,” chuckling lightly. “Yes, but at least I have you,” I affirmed, genuinely meaning it.
Focusing on Independence
By February, independent living commenced. Artwork adorned my walls, and cozy local coffee shops became favorites. Though I missed our morning rendezvous with the dogs adjacent to my bedroom en route to the home office, excitement for the future was vibrant.
Geographically distanced for years, Dad and Mom’s unwavering support filled my life’s void. Morning calls still connect us, occasionally for advice.
New Beginnings
Valentine’s Day heralded meeting someone new—his profile on Hinge selected independently. He sports a tattoo.
