Atlanta’s Democratic Mayor, Andre Dickens, faced criticism for telling a local citizen, Jonathan Brimer, to “shut up” after Brimer raised concerns about voter-approved transit and pedestrian safety commitments. The exchange took place following a post by Dickens on his Instagram, where he visited Nature Gurlz, an Atlanta group advocating for Black women to enjoy outdoor activities.
Brimer, addressing the mayor’s transportation priorities, commented, “Have some fun by restoring Peachtree St’s pedestrian-centric design in downtown and by delivering what we voted for with extra sales taxes for MARTA by getting Beltline rail done.” In reply, Dickens said Brimer should “shut up and respect our legacy Black women residents that made this city that you get to enjoy freely.” (AP Photo/Ben Gray)
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Brimer expressed surprise at Dickens’ response, noting disappointment in being told to “shut up” for voicing his policy concerns. The mayor’s office opted not to comment when questioned about the post and whether Dickens intended to apologize. A spokesperson stated they were “not weighing in on that at all.”
The incident highlights ongoing grievances regarding Atlanta’s transportation and planning decisions. Brimer clarified his comments were aimed at the administration’s choices rather than the women featured by Dickens. Brimer, residing on Atlanta’s south side, respects his community but criticized the mayor’s treatment of constituents.
The Peachtree Street request revolves around a planned $4.85 million project focused on safety enhancements, including a protected bicycle lane. This project is slated to start in 2027 and conclude in 2029. The Beltline rail concern points to the More MARTA program, funded by voters through a 2016 half-penny sales tax. The project status remains paused at 30% design as officials reevaluate priorities.
On another note, Dickens openly criticized his party in a letter to the DNC following Atlanta’s exclusion from hosting the 2028 Democratic National Convention. Dickens accused DNC chairman Ken Martin of neglecting Atlanta, the South, and Black voters. The DNC, narrowing convention site finalists to Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia, commended all cities for their strong applications without explaining Atlanta’s exclusion.
Fox News Digital sought comment from the Beltline organization but did not receive immediate feedback.
