Metal Detectorists Discover Ancient Gold Bracelets in England

Two metal detector enthusiasts recently made a remarkable find near Carlisle, England. Alan Daniels, 48, and Andy Crammond, 34, uncovered three Bronze Age gold bracelets, known as torcs. These artifacts date back to around 1100 B.C. and weigh a total of 18.27 ounces, or 1.14 pounds. According to Bournemouth News and Picture Service (BNPS), the torcs are valued at approximately $400,000.

Daniels expressed amazement at the condition of the gold, noting that, “Gold doesn’t tarnish at all, and they came out of the ground just the same as when they went in over 3,000 years ago.” Images reveal the torcs in excellent condition.

Crammond recounted to BNPS the shock he felt when discovering the first bracelet just a few inches below the surface of freshly plowed soil. He alerted Daniels, who soon uncovered a second torc. Daniels later found a third about 20 feet from the others, commenting, “It’s like a dream for detectorists—we have never found anything valuable before.”

This discovery has been a significant moment for Daniels and Crammond, who have been searching together for years without a major find. Daniels admitted that before finding the torcs, he thought the excursion would end like many others—with disappointment.

The British Museum is currently assessing the torcs. A legal determination will decide whether these artifacts qualify as treasure. If classified as treasure, the torcs may be purchased by a museum, with proceeds divided between Crammond, Daniels, and the landowner. If no buyer emerges, Daniels and Crammond may have the opportunity to auction the items themselves.
