Wisconsin Primary: A Test for Socialist Surge and Establishment Democrats

2 hours ago 0

High-Stakes Wisconsin Democratic Primary

The Democratic primary in Wisconsin presents a significant challenge as establishment Democrats compete with DSA-backed Francesca Hong. Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker provides insights into the primary, discussing Hong’s progressive policies. Her controversial social media posts, such as ‘cancel Thanksgiving,’ attract attention.

Francesca Hong’s Perspective and Social Media History

Hong, a socialist candidate for governor, has a history of inflammatory online remarks. Describing America as ‘an abundance of suffering,’ she emphasizes the need for change. In a post from January 2022, Hong advocates for equal rights for Black and Brown communities.

“I want this country to stop being an abundance of suffering but a wealth of opportunity,” Hong’s post reads.

Her advocacy focuses on electing non-racist representatives who better represent diverse communities.

Controversial Statements and Election Goals

Hong’s past views, including ‘cancel Thanksgiving,’ highlight critical stances on America’s history. Her critique of Thanksgiving links colonialism with outbreaks that affected indigenous populations.

Despite controversial posts, Hong aims for the Democratic nomination, representing a wave of socialists challenging establishment candidates.

Hong expressed anxiety around White people in a 2019 post, revealing personal experiences at Culver’s in Black River Falls.

“Mostly just wanted to leave bc I was on the verge of an anxiety attack,” she wrote.

Police Abolition and Reform Views

Following the decision not to charge officers in Jacob Blake’s shooting, Hong supported abolishing police forces.

“Reform can’t be an option,” Hong said, expressing solidarity with affected communities.

Her campaign confirmed that while she supports police abolition as an ideal, practical limitations exist.

“Her values haven’t changed,” a spokesperson noted, describing abolition akin to tackling poverty.

Focus on Voter Concerns

Hong remains focused on issues important to voters, dismissing controversies over past statements. Her desire to become a sports journalist in college taught her about making ‘hot takes.’

Her campaign underscores her focus on present-day concerns, although comments from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggest distance from radical ‘woke’ stances within the party.

As the primary approaches, scrutiny continues over Hong’s previous remarks, with no comment forthcoming from her campaign on recent coverage.
