The Lacitinolas’ Culinary Journey with Vintage Camper Trailers

Paul and Caroline Lacitinola have turned their passion for vintage camper trailers into more than a hobby; for them, it represents a bridge to fond memories. This California couple has been active in the vintage trailer scene for 20 years, and for the past 15 years, they have published the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine.

The Lacitinolas have embarked on a new venture: a cookbook featuring over 120 cherished recipes. These dishes include family favorites, camper staples, and restaurant classics. They celebrate America’s tradition of bringing people together at campsite gatherings.

Preserving Memories Through Cuisine

Paul Lacitinola expressed the couple’s enthusiasm for food, stating, “A cookbook seemed like the natural combination of our vintage trailers and cars and classic stuff along with our other hobby — eating.” The Vintage Camper Trailer Cookbook aims to preserve more than recipes; it encapsulates the emotional ties connected with camping experiences.

“I really feel like the trailers have so much relationship in them that it’s all about the people, and camping has a lot of emotional connection,” Caroline Lacitinola said.

For some, vintage trailers resurrect childhood memories of camping trips and familial bonds, making them deeply nostalgic.

Changing Perspectives and the American Dream

Caroline believes newer generations venture into vintage camping for varied reasons. “The American dream has shifted a little bit from doing the 9-to-5 every single day to really experiencing life,” she notes.

The cookbook echoes this notion, featuring recipes from family, campers, and children. It even includes well-loved selections from Paul’s previous restaurant ventures.

Signature Dishes with Nostalgic Flavor

Some recipes carry deep sentimental value. One notable dish includes “Grandma Mandy” sandwiches. These consist of white bread filled with cheese and jelly, toasted over the campfire. Despite sounding unconventional, Paul assures they are delicious. Caroline initially doubted their taste, but she eventually found them irresistible.

At their vintage trailer rallies, the couple has gained notoriety for their pancake breakfasts. Whether basic or topped with unique ingredients like peanut butter and bacon, these gatherings have become a staple in their community.

“Anything that you could do where you connect as a group is the essence of vintage camping to me. Because people are really the core of our hobby,” shared Caroline.

Joining the Community

Paul and Caroline welcome newcomers to explore the lifestyle by attending trailer rallies, touring restored campers, and joining community events.

“Go out and get one, even if it’s a cheap one, if it’ll work for you for a while,” Paul encourages. “It doesn’t have to be your forever trailer. But go out and get one and get involved in the community.”
