Understanding the Complex Interplay of Sleep, Stress, and Brain Activity

Many people in the United States face difficulties getting a proper night’s rest. According to cognitive neuroscientist Yousuf Aslam, the issue might go beyond just having poor bedtime habits. The brain’s capacity for sleep is closely linked to whether it feels secure enough to relax. Unresolved stress and anxiety may keep individuals in heightened alertness.

Aslam discussed with Newsweek the intricate interaction between neuroscience, psychology, neurochemicals, and physiological processes that regulate sleep. While biological factors play a critical role, emotional elements are equally crucial.

How the Brain Regulates Sleep

Aslam, a specialist in neuromechanics with an academic background in neuroscience and biochemistry from Queen Mary University, London, explained that two main biological systems manage sleep: the circadian rhythm and sleep-wake homeostasis.

The circadian rhythm operates as an internal 24-hour clock, controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus. It adjusts melatonin production based on light and darkness.

Sleep-wake homeostasis tracks the sleep the body requires. This system is managed by adenosine, a chemical that accumulates during waking hours and decreases during sleep. Caffeine is known to promote alertness by blocking adenosine receptors.

However, sleep involves more than biology. Stress and emotional regulation significantly affect sleep. Stress can lead to increased cortisol production, interrupting normal sleep processes.

When the Brain Feels ‘Unsafe’

According to Aslam, two primary stress-related factors disrupt sleep.

The first is derived from unresolved experiences or perceived inadequacies from the past. The brain may become unsettled due to feeling unsafe from past memories, such as painful events, unresolved issues, or a persistent belief that one hasn’t achieved enough.

The second factor is anxiety about future events. Here, the brain might feel unsafe about anticipating negative outcomes, fearing looming responsibilities, or worrying about having too much to handle ahead.

In either scenario, the brain struggles to relax. When the brain feels ‘unsafe,’ it enters a sympathetic nervous response, also called the fight or flight response. This raises heart rate and brain activity, making falling asleep and staying asleep more difficult.

For sleep to occur, the brain must first slow down. It must feel safe and secure, enabling it to reduce thought volume and transition out of a stress state. The process involves moving from overthinking to cognitive and physical relaxation. Brain activity shifts from beta waves, linked to wakefulness and stress, to alpha waves, the gateway to cognitive relaxation, allowing deeper sleep stages to occur.

Individuals unable to make this transition often end up scrolling on phones late into the night, trying to tire themselves into slumber.

A Nightly Exercise for Better Sleep

Aslam proposes a nightly gratitude-writing practice to tackle these stressors.

The exercise entails writing three aspects you are thankful for from the day or past, three future gratitudes, and four things you appreciate about yourself now. This routine trains the brain to feel secure about past events, future happenings, and the present. Aslam advises doing this exercise right before bed since the brain processes thoughts for up to four hours after sleep begins.

“Often, people go to sleep thinking about the day they’ve had or the day ahead. The brain keeps working on this trying to ‘solve’ these concerns—and you wake up exhausted, even though you may have slept for seven to eight hours.”

Instead of focusing on worries, the goal is to fall asleep with security and gratitude. Additionally, Aslam suggests handwriting the gratitude list with a pen in capital letters rather than using a phone or digital device, enhancing the brain’s perception of paper and ink.

In the morning, read the list within 45 minutes of waking. This timing is crucial as the brain is more open to reprogramming. Avoid checking messages or emails immediately, which can trigger stress responses. Similarly, delaying caffeine intake for 45 minutes after waking helps regulate cortisol levels.

Aslam concludes that improving sleep can significantly affect mental health, including enhanced focus, clarity, and memory.
