“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has made a significant impact at the box office during its debut weekend. The Sony-released film achieved $355 million in ticket sales in North America, marking it as the second-largest opening in the region’s history. This impressive figure was only slightly less than the record set by “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned $357 million upon its release in 2019.

Globally, “Brand New Day” reached a whopping $927 million, supported by international sales from more than 73,500 screens. Notably, China contributed $121 million to the international tally. This success positions the movie’s worldwide debut as second only to “Endgame,” which had a $1.2 billion opening.

Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man continues to resonate with audiences. His previous film, “No Way Home,” generated over $1.9 billion globally, becoming the eighth-highest grossing film ever, not adjusted for inflation. It was also the first film to surpass the $1 billion mark since the pandemic began.

The triumph of “Brand New Day” follows the release of another major film featuring Holland and Zendaya, “The Odyssey,” which earned $51 million in its third weekend. Together, these films contributed to a record-breaking weekend for North American theaters, with estimated total ticket sales of $430 million, as reported by Rentrak.

“Brand New Day” set a record with a $168 million opening day from 4,487 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, surpassing “Avenger: Endgame’s” $157 million Friday opening. Although studio projections anticipated a $325 million total for the weekend, the film exceeded expectations.

Previous records for best North American openings include “Spider-Man: No Way Home” with $260 million in 2021, “Avengers: Infinity War” with $257 million in 2018, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $247 million in 2015.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Brand New Day” was produced with a reported budget of $225 million, excluding marketing expenses. Concerns existed about whether this film would match the audience enthusiasm of its predecessor, which featured previous Spider-Man actors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. In reality, the film exceeded expectations.

“Brand New Day” received positive reviews, holding a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning an “A” CinemaScore, and a five-star PostTrak rating. Audience demographics, according to PostTrak, showed 61% male ticket buyers and a dominant 18-24 age group, comprising 36% of attendees.

EntTelligence estimates around 24.1 million people watched “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” during its opening weekend, marking Sony Pictures’ largest-ever opening.

Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO, praised Tom Holland’s performance, having adjusted the film’s production schedule for Holland to star in “The Odyssey.” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige highlighted the lasting appeal of Marvel characters and their global fan connection, with upcoming projects teased by the film’s success.

“Moviegoers are eager for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human,” said Producer Amy Pascal.

This year, younger audiences have bolstered the success of several films, including “Obsession,” “Backrooms,” and “The Drama,” starring Zendaya. As “The Odyssey” fell only 43% in its third weekend, its combined influence with “Brand New Day” has propelled the box office season.

In addition to animated films like “Toy Story 5,” “Minions & Monsters,” and “Moana,” “Hadestown: The Musical” stood out, grossing $2 million and surpassing “Hamilton” as the highest-grossing live theater capture release.

Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends, noted the “Spider-Man” effect might lead to a record-breaking summer, possibly exceeding $4 billion in sales, marking it as a crucial period for the industry.
