The FBI has developed a full-scale model of an American town within a secure facility in Alabama. This setup provides agents a realistic environment to train for damaging cyberattacks. Purpose of the Kinetic Cyber Range

The FBI has created a range known as the Kinetic Cyber Range on its campus in Huntsville, Alabama. The 22,000-square-foot facility mirrors a small American community. Inside, there are fully furnished homes, a hotel, a gas station, a grocery store, a courthouse, a hospital, and a power company. Unlike traditional training sets, every building connects to functioning networks, devices, and operational technology that simulate real-world systems.

The town also houses a data center with more than 200 physical servers running both Windows and Linux systems. This setup mimics corporate IT environments for training purposes.

Enhancing Cyberattack Training

The aim is to move cyber training beyond classroom exercises into realistic, high-pressure situations. Historically, cyber investigators trained using simulated data at computer workstations. As cyberattacks have become more disruptive, practical training that mirrors real incidents has gained emphasis. The Kinetic Cyber Range allows trainees to experience conditions firsthand. Exercises include:

• Handling breaches in corporate networks and gaining access to systems
• Gathering and analyzing digital evidence in real-world environments

Since opening in February 2025, the range has trained over 1,400 students, including FBI personnel and law enforcement partners. The FBI underscores the town as a necessary evolution in cyber training, with digital threats now impacting the real world. However, TechCrunch critics argue about controversial aspects, such as tools used to extract data from locked or encrypted devices. These tools rely on hidden vulnerabilities that are undisclosed to device makers. Such flaws, if discovered, can also be exploited by hackers or malicious actors.
