Ted Danson Reflects on Personal Life During ‘Cheers’ Finale

Ted Danson recently opened up about the challenges he faced in his personal life during the final phase of his career on the iconic sitcom, ‘Cheers.’ Speaking on his podcast, ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name,’ the 78-year-old actor shared insights into his struggles at that time.

Danson revealed that, amidst the ending of ‘Cheers’ in 1993, he was unaware of the show’s conclusion due to the turmoil in his personal life. He stated, ‘I had messed up my life so much that I didn’t even realize ‘Cheers’ was over.’

During the conversation, Danson admitted to being in a state of self-discovery, attempting to understand himself better. He mentioned consulting his mentor for guidance, which provided him with a new perspective on personal therapy and spirituality. Expressing a desire to improve, Danson said, ‘I wanted to stop being a liar. I wanted to be emotionally mature. I wanted to change.’

Reflecting on his fear of being typecast post-‘Cheers,’ Danson told his podcast guest, Charlie Day, that the transition wasn’t difficult. He noted that his personal struggles overshadowed the show’s conclusion, stating, ‘I blew my personal life up so badly.’ He realized the show had ended only months later, as his focus was on his personal issues.

Danson played Sam Malone on ‘Cheers’ from 1982 to 1993, appearing in all 273 episodes. The series concluded after Danson sought new acting opportunities, leading executives to decide against continuing without him. He shared, ‘I was changing for the better and working hard at it, so I thought, I may as well jump completely off the cliff.’

After ‘Cheers,’ Danson continued to demonstrate his versatility with roles in ‘Becker,’ ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,’ and ‘The Good Place.’ He currently stars in Netflix’s ‘Man on the Inside,’ portraying a retired professor turned undercover spy in a nursing home.

Danson commented on the show, ‘There’s something inherently funny about a 76-year-old retired college professor whose life shut down. His daughter, worried about him, suggests getting a project, leading him to whimsically become an undercover spy in a retirement home.’
