U.S. Jobless Claims Reach Lowest Level in Decades Amid Economic Uncertainty

For the week ending July 18, applications fell to 187,000, marking the lowest level in over fifty years.

The data reveals a stark contrast to the expected 215,000 applications projected by FactSet analysts. Despite geopolitical tensions and soaring oil prices due to military actions against Iran, layoffs in America remain notably low.

Carl Weinberg from High Frequency Trading emphasized that the labor market is resilient, showing little impact from oil price surges. Yet, prolonged conflict and elevated energy costs could eventually compel businesses to cut their workforce to manage expenses.

Oil prices rose nearly 5% early Thursday, reaching over $91 per barrel, the highest in six weeks. Concurrently, average U.S. gas prices exceeded $4 a gallon, tightening budgets for consumers and fuel-reliant businesses.

The June jobs report highlighted cautious hiring trends, as employers added 57,000 new jobs, less than half of the previous month’s figures. While the unemployment rate dipped to 4.2% from 4.3%, many job seekers have ceased exploring opportunities, affecting unemployment statistics.

Previously healthy job gains over the past three months alleviated some market fears, but hiring growth has decelerated since 2025, influenced by tariffs, workforce reductions, and sustained high interest rates.

Recent layoffs include prominent companies such as Verizon, UPS, Amazon, Disney, Starbucks, and Walmart. Microsoft announced a reduction of 4,800 jobs, impacting its Xbox division prominently.

The moving average of weekly jobless claims adjusted for volatility fell by 7,250 to 207,500. Meanwhile, total claimants for unemployment benefits hovered just under 1.8 million for the week ending July 11, reflecting a historically stable labor market.
