Tyrannosaurus Rex Fossil Breaks Auction Records

A Tyrannosaurus rex fossil named “Gus” sold for $50.1 million, setting a record as the most expensive dinosaur bones ever auctioned. Sotheby’s announced the sale of the 67-million-year-old fossil. This sale surpassed the previous record held by a nearly complete stegosaurus sold for almost $45 million in 2024. The former record for a T. rex skeleton, “Stan,” was nearly $32 million in 2020.

Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s vice chair, emphasized the exceptional care taken with Gus. “The market responds when great specimens are taken care of in the right way,” she commented.

Details of the Fossil

“Gus” stands about 12 ½ feet tall and 38 feet long, representing a 63% complete adult T. rex. It includes an “exceptionally preserved” skull with a jaw full of powerful teeth and two “well represented” feet. Features like the furcula, or wishbone, add to its rarity. The fossil was discovered in 2021 on a ranch in South Dakota and was named after Gary Licking, the late property owner.

The Auction Scene

Seven potential buyers vied for Gus in a tense 10-minute auction. Auctioneer Phyllis Kao encouraged higher bids, emphasizing the rarity of such a find. “It’s a T. rex, after all,” she declared. Sotheby’s had estimated the fossil would fetch between $20 and $30 million. The winning bidder remains anonymous.

Scientific Opinions

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology advocated for Gus to be displayed publicly. Kristina Curry Rogers, the society’s vice president, argued that fossils have a rich scientific story to tell. She noted many significant paleontological advances occur long after a fossil’s discovery. A stegosaurus, similar to “Apex,” and other notable specimens like “Sue” and “Stan,” are housed in museums to facilitate ongoing research and public viewing.

The Tyrannosaurus rex, meaning “King of the Tyrant Lizards,” was a dominant predator during the late Cretaceous period. Known for its powerful jaw and small arms, it has captured the public’s imagination. From children’s entertainment like Barney to blockbuster films like Jurassic Park, the T. rex is iconic.

This fearsome hunter roamed what is now western North America. Warm climates, high sea levels, and rich coastal floodplains characterized the area. This environment supported its primary prey, large herbivores like the triceratops.
