On Monday, Kylian Mbappé criticized a Paraguayan senator for making racist comments following Paraguay’s defeat to France in a World Cup match. The French star labeled Celeste Amarilla, a member of Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, as “despicable” and “unworthy” of her position in Paraguay’s Congress.
Mbappé stated on social media that Amarilla’s reckless and racist behavior overshadowed the accomplishments of Paraguayan players in the tournament. After scoring the decisive penalty in France’s Saturday victory over Paraguay, Amarilla mocked Mbappé’s background and appearance.
France progressed to the quarterfinals and will meet Morocco on Thursday. The Paraguayan government responded with a statement condemning Amarilla’s remarks, emphasizing that they are contrary to values of peaceful coexistence and human dignity promoted by Paraguay. The statement clarified her comments do not represent the government or people of Paraguay.
The French Football Federation called Amarilla’s comments “abhorrent” and “unacceptable,” announcing plans to involve prosecutors. France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Sports Minister Marina Ferrari both expressed support for Mbappé. Ferrari highlighted the senator’s attack on values embodied by Mbappé, including liberty, equality, and fraternity. Macron praised Mbappé’s “goal against racism” and offered his backing.
France’s Assistant Coach Guy Stéphan added his condemnation, describing the remarks as “indignant, abject, scandalous.” The Associated Press sought comment from Amarilla through social media.
Before the match, ex-Paraguay goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert referred to France’s team as “a squad from Africa.” Philippe Diallo, President of the French Football Federation, noted Chilavert’s past as a great goalkeeper, now overshadowed by his disgraceful comments.
