France Faces Surge in Deaths Amid Record Heat Wave

In late June 2026, France experienced unprecedented temperatures, resulting in around 1,000 excess deaths between Wednesday and Saturday. Santé Publique France, the country’s national public health agency, noted that deaths spiked as temperatures hit the highest levels recorded.

Most of these excess deaths occurred in the western and central parts of the country. Comparisons made to the average daily death rate in the preceding months showed a significant increase, with 85% of the deceased being 65 years or older. However, all age groups were affected to some extent.

While the final toll will take months to ascertain, the current figures remain far below those of the 2003 heat wave, which claimed approximately 15,000 lives. Recent increases in mortality rates were notably observed in hospitals, nursing homes, and particularly at home, with the Paris region experiencing a sharp rise.

This situation highlights the necessity for interventions that support isolated and lonely individuals, especially in densely populated urban areas. Élisabeth Charrier, who heads the national funeral federation, reported to the French newspaper Le Figaro about the heightened activity in mortuaries. She emphasized that facilities in Paris were operating at full capacity due to the surge in deaths.
