Woman’s Vigilance Led to Early Breast Cancer Diagnosis

52 minutes ago 0

Ariba Karim, a 32-year-old woman from Belfast, Northern Ireland, experienced unusual bruising and severe fatigue before discovering a lump. Initially, she felt a stabbing pain in her right breast that lasted from seconds to half an hour. This prompted her to self-examine, but no lump was felt at that time. She discussed these symptoms with friends, assuming hormonal changes might be the cause. However, the appearance of bruises and extreme tiredness, requiring lengthy naps, heightened her concern.

After discovering a lump in her breast, Karim sought medical advice. The private general practitioner (GP) she consulted did not suspect cancer due solely to her being under 40. Despite her concerns, she was prescribed antibiotics. An urgent referral to the National Health Service (NHS) was estimated to take 30 to 40 weeks. Feeling uneasy about the delay, Karim asked for a referral for a private clinic visit.

At the Ulster Independent Clinic in Belfast, an ultrasound and biopsies were conducted. The consultant’s expression during the ultrasound signaled concern. Further tests, including a mammogram and biopsies from her breast and armpit, were needed for a formal diagnosis. At a follow-up appointment, Karim was encouraged to bring someone with her. She learned she had stage 1 breast cancer, with an aggressive grade 3 tumor.

Fortunately, follow-up tests indicated the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes which, though inflamed, showed no cancer signs. An MRI identified that the lump measured just under two inches and flagged two suspicious areas in her breast for close observation. Currently, Karim is undergoing chemotherapy and shares her experiences on social media to raise awareness among women about breast cancer symptoms.

Karim has been overwhelmed by how many women shared similar experiences after reading her story online. Her advice emphasizes self-advocacy: if anything feels wrong, pursue further checks to potentially save lives.
