Survivor Accounts from the Front Line
Survivors of the deadliest Iranian attack on U.S. forces since the conflict began have challenged the Pentagon’s version of events. They claim their unit in Kuwait was inadequately prepared, leading to the deaths of six service members and injuries to more than 20.
Members of the targeted unit spoke to CBS News for the first time, revealing details of the attack and its aftermath as experienced on the ground. These soldiers dispute Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s portrayal, who described the drone as a ‘squirter’ that penetrated a fortified position in Kuwait.
An injured soldier stated, ‘Painting a picture that ‘one squeaked through’ is a falsehood. The unit was unprepared to provide any defense for itself.’ Nonetheless, those at the compound reacted swiftly with ingenuity and valor, saving lives despite chaos.
Eyewitness Accounts and Exclusive Footage
Eyewitness accounts, along with exclusive photos and videos from CBS News, depict the attack’s aftermath at the thinly protected Kuwaiti port facility on March 1. A photo shows smoke rising from the site, illustrating the severe impact of the Iranian drone strike.
In the hours preceding the attack, incoming missile alarms directed about 60 troops to a cement bunker. Subsequently, an ‘all-clear’ alarm led officers to return to their desks, managing logistics across the Middle East. Approximately 30 minutes later, chaos ensued.
‘Everything shook,’ a soldier said, comparing the event to scenes from movies. They described the aftermath: ‘Head wounds, heavy bleeding, perforated eardrums, and shrapnel wounds.’ The blast, captured in a video, killed six and injured over 20, marking the deadliest assault since 2021.
Operational Strategies and Tactical Decisions
Regarding Operation Epic Fury, most American forces in Kuwait were relocated to safer zones in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Soldiers were advised not to carry extensive personal equipment, aiming to avoid being targets.
However, members of the Army’s 103rd Sustainment Command followed different orders, relocating to Port of Shuaiba. The military base was protected by T-walls, offering limited defense against aerial assaults.
‘It’s a classic, older military base,’ a soldier recalled, questioning why they stayed within Iran’s missile and drone range. Some intelligence indicated their post was a potential Iranian target.
The soldier expressed concerns over inadequate protection, noting that vertical blast barricades did not shelter them from above.
Official Responses and Ongoing Investigations
A Pentagon spokesperson declined to comment on soldiers’ claims due to an active investigation. Assistant Secretary of Defense Sean Parnell previously asserted, ‘Every possible measure has been taken to safeguard our troops.’ He described the facility as fortified with six-foot walls.
Evolving Warfare Tactics
The conflict highlighted Iran’s shift to drone warfare, altering battle strategies globally. The Shahed drone explosion at the U.S. worksite exemplified this change.
‘It was chaos,’ an injured soldier recalled. ‘Soldiers triaged themselves using makeshift bandages.’ They used civilian vehicles to transport wounded personnel to hospitals in Kuwait City.
Despite successful evacuations, one survivor conveyed lingering concerns, knowing not all soldiers were immediately rescued.
Importance of Truth and Accountability
Survivors questioned Hegseth’s account, emphasizing the importance of truth and accountability. They clarified their intent: not to undermine morale or criticize military leadership but to learn from mistakes.
One soldier acknowledged, ‘That’s true,’ concerning the inherent risk of combat. Yet, they believed the attack could have been preventable.
‘I am deeply saddened by their loss and will carry this with me for life,’ the soldier expressed. ‘I’m immensely proud of their sacrifice, as their families should be.’
