Chicago White Sox Capitalize on Errors, Defeat Tampa Bay Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Chicago White Sox won Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays by scoring early and taking advantage of defensive errors. Reaching the postseason remains a goal for the American League Central-leading Sox, who defeated the Rays 9-1 at Tropicana Field. The victory took place in front of 23,559 spectators.

In the opening inning, White Sox left fielder Sam Antonacci grounded to second base. Ryan Vilade failed to handle the ball cleanly, allowing Antonacci to reach on an error. This error was one of several by the Rays in the first inning, contributing to the Sox’s two runs scored.

“It’s always great to win these types of games,” said infielder Miguel Vargas, reflecting on the team’s triumph over the AL East-leading Rays.

The victory enabled the Sox to maintain a three-game lead in the division over the Cleveland Guardians, who secured their own win against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Antonacci advanced to third on a double by Colson Montgomery. Andrew Benintendi then reached base on a grounder that pitcher Griffin Jax couldn’t field promptly. Montgomery scored on subsequent missteps, giving the Sox a two-run lead, which set the game’s tone.

“To get two runs early is a nice way to start the game,” noted Sox manager Will Venable, highlighting the impact of the Rays’ defensive errors.

Benintendi added a solo home run in the fourth inning, while Everson Pereira contributed with a double driving in two runs and a two-run home run later in the game.

Pereira’s performance was noteworthy, especially given the challenges he faced throughout the season, including injuries and a concussion.

Pereira acknowledged through an interpreter, “It hasn’t been an easy year. A lot of ups and downs. But you know what, there’s nothing I can do about it. Now I just focus on what I can do and all the things that we have ahead of us.”

Vargas further extended the lead with his two-run home run in the ninth inning.

White Sox pitcher Anthony Kay delivered an impressive performance by scattering seven hits over 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. He managed to escape bases-loaded situations twice, achieving his eighth win of the season.

“He had everything working,” Venable remarked, praising Kay’s ability to navigate challenging innings.

The Sox showcased their competitiveness against top teams from the AL East, previously splitting series against the Yankees and now defeating the Rays, who hold the best record in the AL.

“Taking two out of four from the Yankees and then two out of three from here, it shows where we’re at in the league,” Kay said, emphasizing the team’s current standing and future prospects.

With an upcoming series against Boston, the Sox expressed optimism about their performance while welcoming pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners. This acquisition adds depth, aiding their pursuit of playoff aspirations.

“I think we did a really good job to put the front office in that position,” Vargas reflected, considering the new opportunities that Castillo brings to the team.
