Recent images reveal that President Donald Trump’s name has been removed from the facade of the Kennedy Center. This follows a prolonged court dispute and the subsequent erection of a tarp and scaffolding to obstruct public view of the changes.
The tarp, set up on June 13, a day after a federal judge’s deadline, has hidden the removal of Trump’s name from public sight. Mallory Miller, a former employee of the Kennedy Center and co-founder of Hands Off the Arts, suggests that the tarp’s presence is a deliberate effort to protect Trump’s image. Miller believes the Trump administration wishes to prevent the public from seeing the building without his name until all appeals are processed.
The Kennedy Center has yet to comment on why the tarp and scaffolding are still in place nearly 10 days after the removal. Initially reported by The Washington Post, these developments have raised questions about the purpose of continued coverage.
Built in 1964, the building was named the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in honor of President Kennedy, who was assassinated in November 1963. His successor, President Lyndon B. Johnson, signed the naming bill into law.
In December, Trump’s appointed board voted to add his name to the facade, changing it to “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” However, a federal judge recently ordered the removal of Trump’s name, stating the board lacked the authority for such a change. Judge Christopher Cooper wrote, “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.”
The ongoing presence of the tarp and scaffolding prompts speculation about intentions behind its continued use.
On June 13, a Kennedy Center official confirmed to Judge Cooper that all references to Trump—both online and on the building—had been removed. Miller, previously involved in artistic programming at the Kennedy Center, credits public opposition for influencing the outcome. “Trump thought he could come in and take this crown jewel of arts and culture,” she stated. She emphasizes the importance of public efforts in counteracting the change.
