Trevor Bauer is returning to Mexico, highlighting his continued absence from Major League Baseball despite strong performances on the field. After excelling in the Atlantic League with the Long Island Ducks, Bauer, a 35-year-old right-handed pitcher, has signed again with the Diablos Rojos.
Bauer previously had a stellar run with the Diablos Rojos, achieving a 10-0 record in 2024. This move to Mexico is not due to a lack of skill but rather the lack of interest from MLB teams. In his recent stint with the Long Island Ducks, Bauer achieved a 5-1 record and a 2.36 ERA, accumulating 66 strikeouts and only seven walks over 42 innings.
Bauer’s absence from the MLB is not related to a downturn in his capabilities. He still faces repercussions from a league suspension that significantly changed his professional path. Initially suspended for 324 games by Commissioner Rob Manfred, an independent arbitrator later shortened the suspension to 192 games. Bauer’s suspension followed allegations that stirred media coverage, although criminal charges were never filed. Text messages showcasing intentions to target him financially shifted public perception.
Bauer never paid nor received damages in the legal resolution, but the path back to MLB remains shut.
MLB teams continue to give playing time to struggling pitchers while professing to pursue victories. This contradiction makes Bauer’s situation more evident. Since leaving MLB, he has performed well internationally, with notable successes in Japan and Mexico, and improved his public image on digital platforms. His recent strong performance with the Long Island Ducks adds to his perseverance in professional baseball. However, Bauer will once again play in Mexico City, seeking opportunities that the MLB does not offer him.
