In June, Seattle’s weather is unpredictable. Locals often joke that summer starts after July 4. Typically, June involves clouded skies and occasional drizzle. Yet, this year is different. The city enjoys clear skies and sunshine at 75 degrees, presenting a picturesque backdrop with mountains in view. Seattle hosted its first World Cup match with much enthusiasm. On a sunny Friday, the United States’ triumph over Australia with a 2-0 score marked a significant event at Seattle Stadium. This victory secured the USMNT’s position in the Round of 32. The atmosphere was vibrant, with Belgium and Egypt also participating earlier in the week.

Community Engagement and Enthusiasm

The waterfront area at Pier 62, featuring a floating pitch, buzzed with activity. Pioneer Square, close to the stadium, became a lively festival ground. Alongside the World Cup match, the city hosted various events, including a Juneteenth celebration, a Mariners game against the Red Sox, and the arrival of multiple cruise ships, drawing an estimated 10,000 Australian visitors.

“I sobbed on TV when we were announced as a city to host,” Adrian Hanauer, Seattle Sounders FC majority owner, shared.

Originally, Seattle’s journey to become a soccer hub began long ago. In 2002, Lumen Field opened, championed by community leaders who positioned it as a dual-purpose stadium for both soccer and football. Fred Mendoza, chairman of the Washington State Public Stadium Authority, played a crucial role in selling the idea to state funders as a venue for future World Cups. This strategy laid the groundwork for Seattle’s emergence on the international soccer stage.

Seattle: A Soccer City

Seattle’s evolution into a soccer city wasn’t sudden. The local soccer scene, organic in its growth, has been nurtured by the dedicated fan base and supportive immigrant communities. Notably, Seattle’s soccer legacy includes Kasey Keller, a former World Cup goalkeeper from nearby Olympia.

The Seattle Sounders FC has also driven this transformation. From humble beginnings in the minor leagues, Adrian Hanauer spearheaded their elevation. By 2009, the Sounders entered Major League Soccer, quickly becoming a successful franchise without needing to build a new culture from scratch.
