Many parents find extended-family vacations beneficial as they often provide much-needed assistance with young children from relatives. However, this experience can differ significantly from one family to another. In some cases, like ours, the expected support is not quite realized. My parents, for instance, offer minimal help. They avoid handling meals, messes, or bedtimes, leaving these tasks to my husband and me.
Adding to the discomfort is the negative dynamic between my parents. Their interactions tend to create a tense atmosphere, impacting anyone around them during these trips. As a result, our annual vacations lack enjoyment and instead feel like an obligation.
My brother and his family have found a way out of this cycle. They have effectively sidestepped the family trips, citing summer sports commitments as the reason. This tactic has spared them from the stress, much to their relief.
