New York Knicks to Visit White House After NBA Championship Win

6 days ago 0

The New York Knicks will visit the White House to celebrate their recent NBA championship. This visit marks a significant event as they become the first NBA champions to meet with President Donald Trump during his tenure. Confirmation of this comes from a government official who relayed the news to NBC News.

James Dolan, owner of the Knicks, disclosed the information during an interview with WFAN sports radio, expressing enthusiasm over the White House’s invitation. “We just did receive an invitation from the White House, which we accepted,” Dolan stated. He noted that the event’s specifics are yet to be finalized.

A White House spokesperson also confirmed the outreach to the Knicks, stating they anticipate hosting the team soon, with the visit date yet to be arranged. Dolan mentioned his longstanding friendship with President Trump, whom he invited to Game 3 of the NBA Finals that took place at Madison Square Garden on June 8.

During Game 3, President Trump was present and watched from Dolan’s box alongside several administration officials, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin. Despite some boos from the crowd, Dolan expressed pride in his association with Trump and the opportunity to take the team to the nation’s capital.

President Trump took to Truth Social to commend the Knicks on their championship win, applauding Dolan and key players like Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mitchell Robinson. “What a year it has been but, even more so, what incredible playoff wins we have all witnessed,” Trump wrote, highlighting the final games as potentially some of basketball’s finest moments.

The upcoming White House visit is noteworthy given the absence of NBA teams visiting since 2017, when the Golden State Warriors first declined the invitation. Stephen Curry publicly expressed his hesitation to attend the Trump White House, leading to a withdrawn invitation. Subsequent champions such as the Toronto Raptors in 2019, and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 refrained from visiting. In contrast, the Oklahoma City Thunder also opted out after their championship win citing “timing” issues.

President Joe Biden’s tenure saw visits from the Milwaukee Bucks, the Warriors, and the Boston Celtics in recent years, reflecting a return to the tradition of championship teams visiting the White House.
