Former professional wrestler and actor Tyler Mane has publicly revealed his diagnosis of breast cancer, aiming to spotlight the often-overlooked risk of this condition in men.
Mane, known for his roles in X-Men and Halloween, disclosed his diagnosis to help raise awareness about male breast cancer. He shared his news through a video posted on social media, stating, I have some bad news. I start chemo today.
Highlighting statistics, Mane noted, One in 750 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and I’m one of them.
Mane’s advocacy sheds light on the misconception that breast cancer is exclusively a female concern.
Mayo Clinic explains that all individuals are born with a small amount of breast tissue. Women usually develop more tissue during puberty, creating the biological foundation for the disease in everyone. Male breast cancer symptoms can include a hard, painless lump behind or near the nipple, skin dimpling, and nipple retraction or discharge.
The rarity of male breast cancer means it constitutes less than 1% of all cases globally. Because routine screenings like mammograms are not common for men, the disease is often detected later, when outcomes are poorer.
Mane is committed to changing this narrative. Because it’s rarely talked about, it’s usually found at later stages and has worse outcomes,
he stated, emphasizing the need for early detection.
Medical experts indicate that while male breast cancer can occur at any age, it is frequently diagnosed in older men. Treatment plans for men generally resemble those for women, involving surgery to remove breast tissue, followed by chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy based on cancer progression.
Mane uses his platform to encourage conversations about male health, advocating for earlier cancer detection. Urging action, he asked his followers to spread awareness, saying, Follow, like and share, and come along for my journey to kick this thing in the ass. Send this to 10 of your friends and have them follow me, because people need to hear this.
