Legal Battle Between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively: A Detailed Overview

2 weeks ago 0

Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively have been embroiled in a high-profile legal dispute stemming from allegations made during the production of their film It Ends With Us. The controversy began in December 2024, when Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, claiming sexual harassment and accusing him of engaging in a smear campaign to tarnish her reputation. Baldoni denied these allegations, asserting that they were unfounded.

A significant development occurred when Judge Lewis J. Liman ruled that Blake Lively could recover attorney and litigation fees. The judge, however, dismissed her requests for triple damages and punitive damages. Baldoni’s legal representative, Bryan Freedman, criticized Lively’s lawsuit. Freedman shared that Lively’s demands for over $300 million in fees and damages were largely unsuccessful, with most of her claims dismissed, leading her to settle the lawsuit without gaining monetary compensation.

“Once again, she failed.” — Bryan Freedman

The legal dispute escalated when Baldoni filed a $400 million countersuit against Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and others, alleging defamation and extortion. This countersuit also targeted The New York Times for its reporting on the matter. However, in June 2025, a judge dismissed Baldoni’s countersuit, ruling that the statements in question were legally protected and that his claims lacked merit to continue. Despite setbacks on both sides, the litigation persisted through 2025 and into 2026, with each party claiming partial victories.

Lively’s legal team contended that Baldoni’s representation used tactics to undermine her credibility. They expressed concern over statements made by Bryan Freedman, accusing him of spreading falsehoods and employing a strategy known as DARVO, which stands for Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. Lively’s team highlighted a California law protecting individuals from being unjustly sued for bringing forth claims in good faith.

The litigation drew to a close in May 2026 when both parties reached a settlement, effectively ending most of the remaining legal proceedings. The details of this settlement have not been publicly disclosed.

This legal saga between the co-stars showcases the complexities of legal battles in the entertainment industry. Public statements from both sides reflect the tension and differing interpretations of the events that transpired.
