The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Detroit, USA, and Windsor, Ontario, has been postponed. This decision is due to unresolved issues between Canada and the United States. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced the delay without detailing the specific issues or the length of the postponement.
The bridge, spanning 1.5 miles over the Detroit River, was set to open later this month. However, it faced uncertainty after President Donald Trump demanded that Canada hand over at least half of the bridge’s ownership to the U.S. federal government along with other undisclosed terms. Despite this, there was an expectation that the opening would still proceed as invitations for the ceremony went out after discussions between Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer and White House representatives.
Bobby Leddy, a spokesperson for Governor Whitmer, emphasized the project as an example of cooperation across political and international lines. Yet, disagreements within the Trump administration, notably with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, challenged the plans. Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada confirmed the delay at the U.S.’s request, citing technical issues needing resolution.
Despite these obstacles, officials anticipate the bridge, a $4.4 billion endeavor, will eventually open. Sandy Baruah, president of the Detroit Regional Chamber, remains optimistic given the project’s long-term significance. The bridge, named after hockey legend Gordie Howe, aims to relieve congestion from existing crossings, namely the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan expressed her hope that the delay is minor, given its bipartisan support. Historically, the Detroit and Windsor connection facilitated commerce and personal travel, but traffic has shifted recently from the Ambassador Bridge to the Blue Water Bridge.
In 2025, the Blue Water Bridge saw more truck traffic than the Ambassador Bridge, with over 9.2 million vehicles crossing both bridges that year. The new bridge seeks to improve traffic efficiency and support U.S.-Canada trade. This initiative aligns with government responsibilities to streamline business operations, according to Baruah.
