A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 has occurred off the coast of Sarangani in the southern Philippines early Monday. The quake prompted a tsunami alert, affecting several coastal areas in southern Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the seismic event. They warned that tsunami waves could reach the coastline between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m. local time.
Authorities have advised residents in affected regions to evacuate to higher ground or move inland. The U.S. embassy in the Philippines echoed this advice for safety measures.
Government reports confirm at least 15 fatalities and 129 injuries resulting from the earthquake. Despite the severity, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that there is no threat to Hawaii.
This is an ongoing situation, and further developments will be reported as they become available.
