Recent videos circulating on social media depict confrontations between law enforcement and protesters outside a New Jersey detention center. On Friday night, demonstrators gathered at the Delaney Hall facility in Newark, sparking tension with authorities. Footage shared by Patrick Nealis on the platform X shows agents moving to disperse the protesters blocking the entrance.
During the incident, two agents detained a protester while several Newark Police vehicles arrived on the scene with officers. Nealis commented, “A coordinated effort from law enforcement cleared the blockage in front of the main entrance, allowing a vehicle to leave and enabling previously blocked vehicles to enter a side entrance.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), responsible for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), responded to the video stating, “Our message to rioters is clear: you will NOT slow us down.”
Earlier, DHS posted another video illustrating a masked protester being detained, highlighting their stance: “If you riot, you will be ARRESTED. We will NOT be deterred by these violent rioters.” The department has been contacted for further comments outside regular business hours.
The Delaney Hall detention center has become a focal point for protests against the immigration policies of former President Donald Trump. Demonstrations have intensified recently, fueled by claims from advocates about a hunger strike over poor conditions within the 1,000-bed facility. The federal government has denied such allegations, accusing protesters of escalating tensions.
Protester Injured by Vehicle
Nealis also posted troubling footage showing a protester struck by a vehicle leaving the center. The video portrays protesters trying to stop vehicles from exiting, and one individual being knocked to the ground. People nearby rushed to assist the injured person, while others continued blocking further exits.
Describing the situation, Nealis noted, “After an extended standoff between officials and protesters, vehicles exiting Delaney Hall forced their way out.”
Funding Boost for Immigrant Legal Defense
New Jersey Governor Mike Sherill announced a $20 million funding initiative for a state program offering legal defense to immigrants facing deportation. On Thursday, Sherill outlined a $12 million increase for the Detention Deportation Defense Initiative, raising the total to over $20 million.
Sherill’s statement emphasized, “Every person deserves dignity and the constitutional rights I swore to protect. This includes due process and fair hearings under the law, regardless of birthplace.” She highlighted the importance of access to legal representation as immigration challenges increase under federal policies.
Additionally, Sherill unveiled a Rapid Legal Response Initiative to provide emergency immigration defense services across New Jersey, aiming to expand legal support for residents impacted by federal immigration enforcement.
Police Sergeant Charged with Theft
A police sergeant in New Jersey faces theft charges after reportedly stealing $10,000 worth of equipment from a photojournalist injured during the protests. Darryl Brown, from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, allegedly took gear belonging to Angelina Katsanis, a journalist for The Associated Press.
Katsanis left her bag, clearly marked with her details, at the protest site when she was injured. Using a geo-tracking device, she traced her belongings to Brown’s home. A search warrant uncovered several items with her identification, resulting in Brown’s suspension and the theft charges.
