Exploring the Obama Presidential Center: A Comprehensive Guide

The Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side represents the deep influence of former President Barack Obama. The center is set to open to the public on Juneteenth, following a dedication ceremony attended by dignitaries. While many notable individuals and groups like museum staff, students, and journalists have already visited, the general public can soon explore the vast nearly 20-acre campus.

This $850 million project offers insight into both the political and personal aspects of the nation’s first Black president. Visitors can view campaign memorabilia and presidential artifacts in the museum’s tower, while the surrounding public spaces include a library, basketball court, and picnic area, reflecting Obama’s interests.

This is a safe space for people to come and reflect on the historic moments of this presidency… to come together as a community, said Josh Harris, the Obama Foundation’s vice president of public engagement.

A Peek Inside

The museum aims to be a first-of-its-kind digital experience with no official papers on display. High-tech and interactive exhibits showcase Obama’s campaigns, presidency moments, and life in the White House. A major attraction is a life-sized replica of the Oval Office, where visitors can sit behind the Resolute Desk. Personal items like a letter from President George W. Bush and Obama’s Blackberry offer a personal touch.

Visitors can learn about the Affordable Care Act and immigration policies, among other topics. Exhibits also highlight memorable moments, such as Obama singing Amazing Grace during a 2015 eulogy.

Louise Bernard, the museum’s director, emphasized the importance of reflection, noting that the museum hopes to inspire change within communities.

Michelle Obama’s Influence

Fashion lovers can view about a dozen outfits worn by Michelle Obama, including a black and red dress by Narciso Rodriguez from Election Night 2008. Fabrics from her garments, like the Atelier Versace gown she wore in 2016, are available for tactile engagement.

Presidential Touches

The center’s location holds personal significance for the Obamas. It’s near Barack Obama’s political beginnings, the University of Chicago where he taught law, and Michelle Obama’s childhood neighborhood. Barack Obama’s love for basketball is reflected in the community program-friendly basketball court. Michelle Obama’s contribution includes a garden featuring produce like lettuce and strawberries.

The Obamas’ taste is visible throughout. The John Lewis Plaza serves as a gathering spot. Inside, an extensive mural at the Chicago Public Library branch celebrates literary figures. The reading room showcases books selected by the Obamas.

Admission Options

Entrance costs $30, making it the most expensive U.S. presidential museum. However, the foundation offers free days and discounts for Illinois residents. Most of the campus is accessible without charge, including the library, playground, and certain public areas.
