WNBA Responds to Players’ Social Media Bet

The WNBA responded to a social media post where players Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese appeared to bet $400 on the outcome of a game between their teams. The league, however, won’t penalize the athletes, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. This individual spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the issue.

The original video was shared from the WNBA’s own account during All-Star Weekend, days before the Dallas Wings and Atlanta Dream were scheduled to compete. The footage showed Bueckers and Reese seemingly making a personal bet. The video was uploaded with the caption, “We did?” alongside a laughing emoji, followed by, “Paige Bueckers on the bet she made with Angel Reese at All-Star Weekend on tonight’s matchup.”

The WNBA quickly removed the post but not before it circulated on social media. A spokesperson for the league stated, “While the social media post was intended to be lighthearted, WNBA players are well aware of the league’s policies prohibiting betting on WNBA games and receive training every year reinforcing those policies.” The spokesperson added that the league took the issue seriously, acted to remove the post, and addressed the situation internally. They also emphasized the importance of reminding players that even jokes about betting on WNBA games can lead to consequences.

When asked for comments, both the Wings and the Dream referred to the league’s official statement. According to the WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement, any kind of wagering is strictly forbidden. Offenders can face fines, suspension, or disqualification, depending on the commissioner’s decision.

The game itself concluded with the Dream overcoming a 15-point deficit to defeat the Wings 82-81. Reese contributed 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Bueckers scored 16 points and provided six assists.
