Wisconsin Primary Highlights Socialist Candidate Francesca Hong

The race for governor in Wisconsin is drawing attention as Francesca Hong, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), faces off against establishment Democrats in the primary. Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker discussed the significance of this primary election with Harris Faulkner.

Hong’s policies and social media presence are under scrutiny. Her previous online statements include a post describing America as “an abundance of suffering,” advocating for turning it into “a wealth of opportunity.” She emphasized the necessity of ensuring equal rights for Black and Brown communities by electing leaders from these communities.

“Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621,” Hong posted online, critiquing the celebration of colonialism and its historical impacts on indigenous peoples.

Hong, formerly a chef and now a state representative, is the latest in a line of socialist candidates challenging established Democrats. Controversies around her posts have emerged, including remarks about feeling uncomfortable in predominantly white spaces and her stance on police reforms. During the aftermath of Jacob Blake’s shooting, she advocated for policing reforms, articulating her views on systemic racism.

Her earlier comments on abolishing the police have been highlighted. Hong’s campaign team reiterates her opinions on policing are aspirational and align with broader goals like alleviating poverty or disease. The spokesperson confirmed that her values remain consistent.

Hong explained she once aspired to be a sports journalist, acknowledging that social media can sometimes be a platform for strong or misguided expressions. Despite this, she maintains her focus on addressing key voter concerns. Hong has not received an endorsement from prominent Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which has been noted but not expanded upon by her campaign.
