Colten Siebert’s Leadership Transforms Libertyville Football

Eight months before the season began, Colten Siebert, a lineman for Libertyville, was already feeling urgency. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 255 pounds, Siebert had a strong junior year playing left guard and center. However, the team’s early exit from the Class 6A playoffs left him dissatisfied. Determined to change things, Siebert set clear goals for himself.

“I wanted to be a captain and lead the team,” Siebert said. “I realized I had to step up and fill the shoes of those before me. I committed to the weight room, never missing a session, and made a point to guide younger teammates.” His commitment laid a strong foundation for his senior season.

Libertyville has had a successful season, boasting a 6-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play. They’ve secured at least a share of the North Suburban Conference title with a recent 14-10 win over Lake Zurich. Siebert’s leadership became crucial after starting the season with two losses. Following their Week 2 defeat, Siebert quickly organized a players-only meeting.

“The meeting was about improving our situation,” Siebert stated. “It changed our mindset. The captains met with coaches the next day, and from that point on, we played with greater urgency. We overcame the hurdle of the 0-2 start.”

To turn their season around, Libertyville won against Warren, a significant challenge, completing the game the day after it began due to lightning. “We weren’t swayed by the challenge of playing Warren. We knew our potential,” Siebert noted. “Winning required focus and physicality, and we accomplished that.” Siebert has consistently contributed to the team’s identity, particularly appreciating the victory over Lake Zurich.

“Last season, they defeated us badly,” Siebert recalled. “We prepared all year for this rematch. As a lineman, games like this, where every yard matters, are my favorite. Winning with a touchdown in the final seconds, ensuring a conference title, is unforgettable.”

This progress wouldn’t be possible without Siebert’s efforts both off and on the field. “He leads our offensive line,” Libertyville coach Tim Budge remarked. “He’s also played a lot on the defensive line and serves as a key figure in the middle. His leadership is instrumental to our team.” Siebert’s attention to teamwork, such as organizing team photos, enhances their spirit.

Siebert embraced a dual role this season, playing both offensive and defensive lines. “I approached the coaches, expressing my readiness to contribute defensively,” he explained. “While new to me, I am committed to mastering defensive techniques. It’s all about full effort.” On the field, Siebert’s performance has been vital in generating over 1,000 rushing and passing yards collectively for the team. His defensive shift to nose tackle has been impressive, recording 17 tackles, four for losses, and 1.5 sacks.

“My role is to disrupt double teams,” Siebert said. “If I can break through and make a play, that’s ideal. The aim is to protect our linebackers from blockers.” His passion motivates his teammates, even if his approach is intense at times.

“He can be tough in practice, but it’s because he cares,” fellow senior Mason Roe shared. “His determination to improve the team is evident in his actions.” Although Siebert doesn’t seek individual accolades, he finds fulfillment in supporting the team’s success.

“Though I’ve never handled the ball, I take pride in doing my part,” Siebert concluded. “It’s more about team success than personal glory. Knowing that I’m contributing effectively is what counts.”
