Will Levis Joins New York Jets, Eyes Career Revival

Will Levis is making a return to the NFL. His career waned with the Tennessee Titans, but he is now seeking a fresh start with a new team. The New York Jets appear to be offering him an environment in which he can learn, improve, and thrive.

Levis is set to join the Jets’ practice squad, according to reports. This move is not an indication that the Jets are looking to replace starting quarterback Geno Smith, but rather, they want to strengthen their depth. Behind Smith, they currently have rookie Cade Klubnik, and adding Levis offers them an additional option with experience and potential.

Levis is noted for being experienced and potentially capable, provided he can overcome the challenges that led to his release by the Titans. He was one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects in the 2023 draft, as well as one of its biggest mysteries.

The Titans drafted Levis in the second round (No. 33 overall) after he didn’t meet expectations in the first round. Levis made a strong impression in his first start, throwing four touchdown passes in a victory over Atlanta. However, his rookie season was disrupted by an ankle injury, and progress stalled.

Throughout his rookie year, Levis showed arm strength and playmaking potential, giving the Titans hope for finding a long-term quarterback. Yet, optimism faded in 2024 when he struggled with turnovers, sacks, and consistency, throwing 13 touchdown passes but also 12 interceptions. The Titans’ poor performance in games he started was evident in their 2–10 record.

The situation worsened as Levis suffered a right shoulder injury against Miami. This injury required offseason surgery, causing him to miss the entire 2025 season. Tennessee then selected Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in 2025, which marked the end of Levis’ time with the franchise before they waived him in August.

At 27 years old, Levis needs solid coaching. The Jets possess the coaching skills necessary to help a quarterback with areas of growth.

Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich has experience working with notable quarterbacks. He coached Peyton Manning during an MVP award-winning season that led to a Super Bowl win, guided Philip Rivers in San Diego and Indianapolis, and coached Andrew Luck to a 39 TD pass season.

Jets quarterback coach Bill Musgrave helped develop Matt Ryan with the Atlanta Falcons and was the offensive coordinator for Derek Carr when the QB went to consecutive Pro Bowls in 2015 and 2016. Although none of these coaching credentials imply that Levis will become the future quarterback in New York, quality coaching is expected to help him harness his potential.

Levis’ NFL journey now enters a pivotal second phase. He remains only 27 years old and holds substantial arm talent, yet he must convince another team that his decision-making, health, and composure can match his physical capabilities.
