“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg expressed her disapproval of the audience blaming President Donald Trump for the Knicks’ loss during Tuesday’s show. The New York Knicks played their first NBA Finals game since 1999 at Madison Square Garden on Monday after winning two games against the San Antonio Spurs. Trump, a New Yorker and longtime Knicks fan, attended the game on an invitation from team owner James Dolan. Despite the Knicks’ effort, the Spurs secured a 115-111 victory.
Some Knicks fans expressed their frustrations publicly, attributing the loss to Trump’s presence. Goldberg responded, clarifying the issue on her show. “A lot of Knicks fans are not happy with you-know-who right now,” she commented regarding fan reactions to the president.
“They were not playing great ball. That was on us,” Goldberg stated, addressing both the audience and co-panelists.
Goldberg noted the complications Trump’s visit brought, commenting on the disruptions caused by heightened security measures. “He came into town, messed up everything,” she explained, highlighting the difficulties in navigating the city during Trump’s visit. Although some audience members agreed with her initial remarks, she stressed that the blame for the team’s performance lay with the Knicks themselves, not Trump. “This man does not have that kind of power,” she affirmed.
Co-host Sunny Hostin expressed a contrasting viewpoint, suggesting that Trump negatively influenced the game’s atmosphere through “bad juju” and “bad karma”. Hostin complained about the security expenses and the president’s negative reception by fans, advising against bringing such an atmosphere to New York.
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin argued that any president attending a game during a winning streak might face blame if the team loses. However, she acknowledged Trump’s loyalty as a fan even during less successful periods for the Knicks.
On the previous day, Goldberg defended the rights of all Knicks fans, including Trump and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, to attend games. “I think anybody who’s a Knicks fan should be there,” she stated, emphasizing fan entitlement regardless of personal opinions.
