4 weeks ago 0

Drew Thorpe’s Rehabilitation Progress

Drew Thorpe showcased his skills, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters over five scoreless innings against Triple-A Buffalo. This performance comes as part of his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte. The Chicago White Sox may look to Thorpe and other minor league pitchers for support as they move deeper into the season.

Manager Will Venable expressed optimism about the potential coming from the minors, stating, “We’re making sure the depth is in a good spot. When there’s a need here, we can tap into it and get the contribution that’s crucial for us as we approach the season’s end.” Venable emphasized the importance of having these players ready to step up.

Pitching Depth Could Be Key

Drew Thorpe has been steadily working his way back from Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him the previous season. This year, he has a 2.70 ERA, with 35 strikeouts and nine walks over 36 2/3 innings. His journey has encompassed starts across different levels, including the Arizona Complex League Sox, High-A Winston-Salem, Double-A Birmingham, and Triple-A Charlotte, where he maintains a 2.55 ERA.

Paul Janish, Director of Player Development, highlighted Thorpe’s successful recovery and performance, noting that Thorpe is consistently throwing and recovering well. Janish stressed the importance of careful management, acknowledging Thorpe’s response has been favorable after each outing despite past hiccups like an appendix issue earlier this year.

Evaluating Noah Schultz and David Sandlin

Noah Schultz, a first-round draft pick in 2022, holds a 6.06 ERA in 15 appearances with the White Sox. After his stint in the majors and subsequent return to Charlotte, he has demonstrated improvement. Schultz has a 1.04 ERA over two September starts and delivered solid performances in August.

David Sandlin The pitcher’s outings this season have yielded a 6.93 ERA in five appearances for the White Sox. Sandlin, however, showed promise with impressive strikeout numbers during his recent games with Charlotte, proving his readiness for potential major-league contributions.

Preparation for Contributions to the Major League

Janish underscored the mindset necessary for these players, particularly those on the 40-man roster, to be ready for stepping up when needed. He noted their flexibility to take on various roles, whether starting games or providing relief efforts, adapting to the major league’s dynamic staff usage.

Noah Schultz and David Sandlin are key individuals who, despite starting roles in Charlotte, could effectively transition to bulk roles for the major league if given the chance. The experience gained throughout their seasons ensures none would be taken by surprise when asked to contribute.
