The White House border official, Tom Homan, criticized anti-ICE protesters in Minneapolis who set up roadblocks and checkpoints, describing their actions as a “joke.” During a press conference in Minnesota, Homan stated that these actions only harm the community itself.
Homan mentioned orchestrating the dismantling of these roadblocks after consulting the local police chief. “Upon learning about the roadblocks, I contacted the chief of police, who then took immediate action to remove them,” Homan explained. “These actions are illegal. The community is being inconvenienced with roadblocks that obstruct everyday activities like grocery shopping or commuting. This needs to end.”
Homan emphasized the withdrawal of 700 federal agents from the Twin Cities, affirming that reduced federal presence has been scheduled. After engaging with state officials like Governor Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, he urged them to ensure local jails cooperate with federal agencies regarding the release of detained illegal immigrants.
Reflecting on positive developments, Homan noted, “We now have a record number of counties that are willing to coordinate with us, allowing ICE to manage illegal aliens before they’re released. This tremendous cooperation ensures a safer environment as fewer officers are needed.”
He further clarified that federal authorities don’t require jails to detain migrants longer than usual. “Our aim isn’t to transform anyone into an immigration officer,” Homan clarified.
Governor Walz expressed approval of this strategic reduction but stressed that more work remains. “This is a positive step but a quicker and more substantial withdrawal is necessary,” Walz commented, advocating for state-driven investigations into specific local incidents.
