Weird Al Yankovic Declines Lucrative Offer for Saudi Comedy Festival

Musician and comedy figure “Weird Al” Yankovic declined a significant financial offer to perform at Saudi Arabia’s first festival last year. In an interview with Pennsylvania’s Tribune-Review, Yankovic shared that he rejected an invitation to perform at the inaugural Riyadh Comedy Festival, citing discomfort over accepting Saudi funds.

“I was invited to the Riyadh Comedy Festival. Obviously, I did not want to participate,” Yankovic stated. “They offered me seven figures for one show, the most I’ve ever been offered.”

Despite his decision, Yankovic did not criticize artists who chose to perform at the festival, which had around 6,000 attendees. “I’m not condemning those who accepted the payment. Everyone likely had personal reasons,” he explained. “But I don’t need to accept any sum if it makes me uncomfortable, and this did.”

This isn’t the first time Yankovic refused a large offer. He previously turned down an AI advertisement opportunity. “I wish I received offers I felt good about accepting,” he told the Tribune-Review.

The Riyadh Comedy Festival sparked controversy in the comedy world. Several renowned comedians criticized peers for appearing at the event. Talk show host Bill Maher called out Dave Chappelle for performing at the festival, questioning free speech claims associated with the event.

Jimmy Kimmel also reacted to comedian Aziz Ansari’s participation, referencing the state-sponsored murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Ansari defended his choice, stating, “I was there for a show. Comedy can promote openness and dialogue, especially in a young country.”
