Vozinha’s Rise to World Cup Fame

1 week ago 0

Vozinha, widely regarded as a legend within Cape Verde, has now captured global recognition. His performance in the scoreless draw against Spain at the 2026 World Cup showcased his skill and leadership, marking a remarkable feat for Cape Verde in their first World Cup appearance.

As the team’s vice-captain and goalkeeper, Vozinha distinguished himself by making seven critical saves. His calm demeanor steadied the team’s nerves during tense moments, highlighting his invaluable leadership qualities. The match against Spain was especially significant for Vozinha, as it coincided with his fortieth birthday, making him the second-oldest debutant in World Cup history.

Tears flowed freely when the full-time whistle blew. Vozinha embraced Stopira, another stalwart of Cape Verde football who had recently come out of retirement to support the team. Their embrace symbolized a decade-long journey marked by sacrifice and dedication.

Vozinha attributed emotional significance to the absence of his grandparents, who raised him, and his mother, unable to attend due to visa issues. Their influence has been profound, continuing through his name. His father named him Josimar, honoring a Brazilian World Cup star from 1986, but his nickname, ‘Vozinha’, originated from the Creole word for ‘Granny’. The name was given to him by older boys, who teased him for running home to his grandparents when frustrated during childhood football matches.

Living on the Cape Verdean island of Sao Vicente, Vozinha initially struggled due to his small stature. But when he grew taller in his late teens, opportunities unfolded. He turned professional in his mid-20s, joining Angolan club Progresso, then moving through clubs in Cyprus, Slovakia, Moldova, and Portugal.

Vozinha debuted for Cape Verde in 2012. He, along with Captain Ryan Mendes, holds the record for the most appearances in major tournaments, including four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and now the World Cup.

Despite a temporary exclusion from the national team in favor of younger talent, Vozinha persisted. Cape Verde’s failure to qualify for the latest AFCON almost led him to retire. Persuaded by teammates and fueled by the prospect of the World Cup, he stayed on.

This historic result highlights the competitive nature of smaller nations in World Cups. Spain, despite having several chances, could not overcome Cape Verde, thanks in part to Vozinha’s outstanding defense.

Fame followed instantly. Vozinha’s Instagram following soared from 50,000 to over two million. Yet, for him and his teammates, the joy of this achievement is the focus.

“These moments are what we work for,” Vozinha remarked. “Starting my professional career late, this is a reward for the journey. I would tell my younger self to be proud. Back then, dreams like this seemed distant, but now it all feels worthwhile.”
