Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, recently announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance. The announcement was made public through a statement they shared on X. The couple expressed their excitement, stating, ‘We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.’
The Vance family thanked the medical professionals at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where Usha gave birth and is currently recovering. The Vances, married since 2014, have three other children: sons Ewan, age 9, and Vivek, age 6, along with their daughter Mirabel, age 4.
This event marks the first occurrence in modern history of a second family having a child while in office. The last time this happened was 156 years ago, during the tenure of Schuyler Colfax Jr., who served as vice president to Ulysses S. Grant. Colfax and his wife Ellen had their son, Schuyler Colfax III, in 1870.
In his book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, JD Vance shared that he had been asking his wife for another child for several years. Usha had been hesitant, partly due to their lives being in the national limelight. However, her perspective shifted following the passing of Charlie Kirk. Vance mentioned that after flying Kirk’s body back to Arizona, conversations with Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, influenced their decision. Erika expressed regret over not expanding her family, which resonated with Usha.
Usha elaborated on this in a CBS Sunday Morning interview, labeling Erika’s words as ‘very powerful’ and ‘certainly very moving.’ While she acknowledged these discussions influenced her thinking, she clarified, ‘I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility. I wouldn’t say that this was, for me in any way, the decisive factor. But it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having.’
