Sophie Cunningham Faces Backlash and Forum Ban After Comments on Transgender Athletes

1 hour ago 0

Sophie Cunningham, a prominent player for the Indiana Fever, found herself at the center of controversy following remarks about transgender athletes in women’s sports. The comments sparked widespread criticism both online and offline.

Several fans and sports analysts voiced their opposition. Among those responding was Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve, who made her stance clear by wearing a “Trans Kids belong” shirt during a game against the Fever.

Despite the social media uproar, the WNBA has not taken any official action against Cunningham. However, the WNBA subreddit, which operates independently from the league, responded by banning several terms related to Cunningham, including “Cunningham,” “Sophie,” and similar variations.

The decision, reported by the New York Post, was communicated through a private message by a subreddit moderator. The moderator explained, “We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to bring out trolls and those not true supporters of the W.” Fans wanting to discuss her were advised to use other subreddits.

When a Reddit user questioned the ban, the moderator replied, “You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned.”

The situation has led the WNBA to review its policies on transgender athlete participation. Team presidents recently convened to evaluate the league’s stance following two male former NBA players seeking eligibility for the 2027 WNBA draft.
