Henry Winkler Reflects on Alternate Career Paths and Dyslexia Challenges

Henry Winkler has discussed what alternative career he would have considered if he hadn’t pursued acting. During an appearance on the “You Could Make This Beautiful” podcast, the 80-year-old actor revealed he had once thought about becoming a child psychologist. His struggle with dyslexia influenced this idea, as he preferred a career requiring minimal formal education. Winkler stated, “I understand children. I’m able to listen and interested in what they have to say.” He expressed a deep appreciation for children and their potential.

Despite these considerations, Winkler achieved fame as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on “Happy Days” from 1974 to 1984. This role earned him three Emmy nominations. Reflecting on his career, Winkler mentioned that dyslexia made the profession challenging for him. Speaking with “PBS News Weekend” in November 2023, he admitted, “Destiny is strange. I’ve chosen a notoriously difficult profession.”

Winkler shared his experiences with dyslexia, which was not diagnosed until he was 31. This came after his stepson’s diagnosis. He recounted the embarrassment and challenges he faced, especially during script reads for “Happy Days.” Winkler developed strategies to cope, like reading scripts multiple times in advance to ensure a smoother read.

His diagnosis initially led to feelings of anger due to years of struggles. “I was humiliated and browbeaten,” he explained. However, he eventually reframed his perspective, seeing his dyslexia as a foundation for resilience and tenacity.

After “Happy Days,” Winkler continued acting, appealing to new audiences with roles in “The Waterboy” alongside Adam Sandler, and TV shows like “Arrested Development,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “New Girl.” In recent years, he starred in HBO Max’s “Barry” as Gene Cousineau. This role brought Winkler his first Emmy win in 2018. He advised aspiring actors to be true to themselves, prepare well, and maintain authenticity.
