Venezuela Earthquake Response: Urgent Needs and Challenges

An intense response is needed in Venezuela following the recent catastrophic twin earthquakes. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) highlighted that the humanitarian aid currently provided falls short of the massive needs.

The critical 72-hour period for locating survivors has passed, making rescue efforts increasingly difficult. Over 1,943 lives have been lost, thousands have been injured, and around 16,000 individuals are now homeless according to government reports. The opposition estimates about 43,000 people remain missing.

In devastated La Guaira, Andrea Montilla shared her grief as she awaited confirmation of her family members’ deaths. The area has become a makeshift morgue, with bodies lying in rows awaiting identification.

A Jordanian team reported a rare success on Tuesday by rescuing a child, now the only known survivor as efforts enter the sixth day. However, not all collapsed buildings have received professional help, leaving families to search through debris.

The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, damaged or destroyed around 59,000 buildings. The devastation is visible from space, yet officials like Gianluca Rampolla from the United Nations predict the death toll might exceed current figures. Authorities are planning for more body bags in response.

International bodies warn of severe challenges ahead. The World Food Programme (WFP) is seeking $50 million to provide emergency food to half a million people over the coming months. So far, 1,200 individuals received assistance in La Guaira, with temporary dining centers now operational. WFP stands ready to extend its reach if funding becomes available.

The World Health Organization has pointed out the strain on Venezuela’s healthcare system. Three health centers suffered critical damage, and several others are only partially operational.
