USMNT Secures Victory Over Paraguay in World Cup Opener

The United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) faced Paraguay in their World Cup opener at 9 p.m. ET in Los Angeles Stadium. This marked an important game with USMNT, coached by Mauricio Pochettino, holding the 17th position in the FIFA World Rankings.

The match took a dramatic turn early on as Paraguay’s Damián Bobadilla scored an own goal in the sixth minute. This unexpected event gave the US an early lead, prompting excitement among fans.

In the packed stadium of Inglewood, California, the atmosphere surged when the USMNT gained an early advantage. Folarin Balogun, a standout player, scored in the 30th minute to double the lead. This marked a significant milestone for the New York native, celebrating his first World Cup goal.

Balogun’s score provided the U.S. with a two-goal cushion, achieved in the third-fastest time for the team in World Cup history. The faster instances occurred in 2002 against Portugal and during a 1930 match with Paraguay, taking place in the 29th and 15th minutes, respectively.

Just before halftime, Balogun scored again, bolstering the US lead and igniting cheers from the crowd. Assisted by a precise pass from Malik Tillman, Balogun sent the ball into the top-left corner for a remarkable goal. The first half concluded with the US leading 3-0.

In the 73rd minute, Paraguay’s Mauricio scored, narrowing the US’s lead to 3-1. Despite this, the USMNT maintained control throughout the remainder of the match. Looking ahead, the team will face Australia on June 19 in Seattle.
