US Faces Belgium Without Key Player Due to Controversial Red Card

The United States is preparing for a crucial World Cup game against Belgium, but will do so without one of its top performers, Folarin Balogun. Balogun received a red card during the Round of 32 match against Bosnia, leading to his suspension from the upcoming match.

The incident arose as Balogun attempted to reach a loose ball and became entangled with an opponent, causing him to inadvertently step on the opponent’s ankle. VAR reviewed the play and determined the act serious enough to warrant a red card.

This decision forced the US to complete the match against Bosnia with 10 players. Balogun’s suspension also means he will not participate in Monday’s critical match against Belgium.

Balogun commented on his ejection and subsequent suspension, expressing disagreement with the referee’s decision. “It was totally unintentional,” Balogun stated to reporters. “I think a yellow card would have been fair. There’s not many places I can place my foot in such a scenario. But it’s happened, and it’s something that I have to accept and move forward from.”

Despite the controversy, US soccer regulations, as per Article 9.6, dictate that the referee’s decisions regarding play are final and cannot be protested, except in rare cases mentioned in the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Additionally, Article 10.5 specifies that a player or official sent off due to a red card will be automatically suspended for their next match.

FIFA has confirmed that Balogun will miss only the Belgium game. If the US advances, he can return for the quarterfinals. Balogun, remaining composed, emphasized the importance of inspiring young fans by handling the situation maturely. “We have to show them the correct way to handle things even when you think it’s unjust,” he remarked. His focus remains on supporting his team and looking forward to what lies ahead.
